Maths
Intent, Implementation & Impact |
At St. Jude's, we believe maths should be enjoyable, challenging, and meaningful for every child. Maths is taught every day and usually embeds mental or arithmetic skills to get children thinking throughout the lesson.
Teachers use White Rose in conjunction with our curriculum, which breaks learning into small, carefully planned steps. This approach helps children build strong foundations and develop a deep understanding of key concepts over time.
We use a mastery approach to teaching, where children first practise key skills (fluency) and then move on to reasoning and problem-solving. Once confident with the basics, they are encouraged to apply what they’ve learned in different ways, developing curiosity and resilience as mathematicians.
Children are supported with a variety of practical resources—such as number lines, place value counters, and Dienes blocks—to help them visualise and explore ideas. These resources are always available so pupils can choose what works best for them as they grow in confidence and independence
