Welcome to Year 5!
Welcome to our brand new school website! We have created the website to keep parents up to date with school news and notices, and to showcase some of the great things our pupils are achieving. The website is extremely easy to edit by all staff at the school, so check back soon for new updates!
We would like to share with you our plans for this half of the autumn term.
Our whole school topic is ‘Amazing People’ and we will be focusing on ‘Award winning People’. Our class topic is ‘Amazing People in History’ as it has a long historical and rich geographical journey.
Studying ‘Amazing People’ links to our history topic of ‘Vikings versus the Anglo Saxons’ where we will find out about the Viking’s and Anglo-Saxon’s struggle for the kingdom of England and how England became a unified country.
In English we have been learning about writing in a range of styles which will include writing biographies. Children have read, analysed and used figurative language to describe characters and sceneries. They will be able to write their own biographies and describe characters for their homework.
We are starting a new book this week called ‘Arrival’ and ‘The Man who walked between the Towers.’ This has a collection of questions and self-assessments which have morals that reflect our school values. The illustrations in the book are brilliant and they link with our Art topic this term, exploring art by Leonardo De Vinci.
Children will also be able to connect art with Religious Education where we will focus on Saints, and in mathematics where we will revise place value skills and extend our knowledge of shapes. In computing, children will use a range of commands to form their own Powerpoint presentations as well as use their computer time to research other areas of our topic to produce biographies and posters.
Homework will continue to be handed out on Thursday and due back on Tuesdays, as usual. Failure to hand in the homework before the deadline means that work may not get marked. All children receive their homework together and we discuss it in detail so that everyone knows what they need to do. Children are expected to read for at least twenty minutes every night in addition to weekly homework.
Our term project is always given to children during the first week back so that children have plenty of time to plan, design and create their projects. As you will have seen, our term project is to use recycled materials to create their own 3D hat for a religious leader. We are looking forward to seeing their respective creations. Deadline is Thursday 1st October 2015.
PE takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure that children have a plain white t-shirt, black sports shorts and black plimsolls. Black tracksuit bottoms may also be worn and full tracksuits when doing P.E. outside.
If you have any questions or require further information about our autumn term, please do not hesitate to speak with us.
